A major tragedy was averted after an
uncompleted 5-storey building caved in
at Oduma layout, in Anambra's
commercial capital, Onitsha on
Wednesday, September 17, 2014,

according to a report by Vanguard.
The incident which happened at 6,
Adikiye street drew the attention of a
large crowd which had gathered for a
search and rescue mission only to
breathe a sigh of relief as the site
workers had just closed for the day.
The incident, which according to an eye
witness – Chidi Onyeocha – occurred
around 7pm after a heavy downpour
brings to six the number of houses that
have collapsed in Onitsha this year.
The chairman of the Anambra state
chapter of the Nigerian Society of
Engineers, Emmanuel Nwankwo while
reacting to the incident said the the
society will investigate the matter.
"We are worried by the incessant
collapse of uncompleted buildings in
Onitsha and its environs. I will be
sending our team to the scene to get
professional evidence at the scene on
what could possibly be the cause of the
collapse. That would take some days
before we can objectively make a
statement on Odume Layout
uncompleted building collapse. Incident
building collapse has become a
recurring phenomenon in Onitsha and
its environs in the past one year. At
least six uncompleted buildings at
various locations have collapsed," he
said.
